Just a reminder that… • K-5 DL classes at GW / K-3 DL classes at PR • Rosetta Stone support for non-ELLs in grades 3-5 • Well developed foundational skills in the native language are essential for strong second language skill development • Progress reports reflect growth in second language development • Middle School DL planning is underway

  3. K-5 DLA Instructional Model:At-a-Glance • K-1: Focus on native literacy development & introduction to 2nd language • 2-3: Full-immersion in 2nd language • 4-5: Departmentalization to meet demands of State assessments & prepare for MS model

  4. Kindergarten DL Students… • are separated for literacy instruction by dominant language all year. • are in mixed groups for math, science and social studies all year – alternating day model.

  5. 1stGrade DL Students… • are separated for literacy instruction by dominant language from September-January. • are in mixed groups for reading instruction from February-June. • remain separated for phonics and writing instruction • Are in mixed groups for math, science and social studies all year – alternating day model.

  6. 2nd & 3rd Grade DL students… • are in mixed groups for reading, math, science, social studies all year – alternating day model. • are separated into homogeneous groups for: • writing workshop • phonics instruction • NOTE: Third grade only • Spanish zone instruction is modified for one month leading up to the NYS ELA and Math exams

  7. 4th & 5th Grade • Language of instruction alternates by unit. • If language arts is being taught in English then social studies, science and math are being taught in Spanish…and vice versa. • There is an emphasis on language arts instruction in English. • NOTE: Spanish zone instruction is modified for one month leading up to the NYS ELA and Math exams.

  8. Great Books • Grades 2-5 DL teachers will be trained in Great Books this year to provide this enrichment approach to qualifying DL students during I-Block

  9. Second Language Progress Reports • K SSL Progress Report • 2nd SSL Progress Report • 4th SSL Progress Report
