History Of South African Wine The South African wine industry dates back to the first vineyard planted 1655 when the Dutch East India Company established a supply station in what is now Cape Town. The wines were intended to ward off scurvy among sailors during their voyages along the spice route. The Dutch had little wine tradition, and between 1680 and 1690 with the help of the French Huguenots, the wine industry began to flourish.
