  1. Голодомор Holodomor Ukrainian Genocide 1932-1933

  2. Ukraine-Background Information • Capital City – Kiev • Since year 882, many kingdoms have controlled this region. • 882-1199 The region was controlled by the KievanRus’. • In 1199 The Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia took over until 1649. • Cossack Hetmanate reigned Ukraine starting in 1649. • It was named the Ukrainian National Republic in 1917, and renamed West Ukrainian National Republic one year later. • In 1922 it became the Ukrainian SSR under Soviet Reign. • In 1991 Ukraine regained independence from the Soviet Union.

  3. Ukrainian Genocide • The Holodomor began in 1922 and ended a year later. • Despite the short timeline, there were many deaths. • Somewhere between 6 and 10 million citizens died in Soviet Ukraine. • It has been a political debate, whether the Ukrainian famine was a result of poor economy during Soviet Industrialization in Ukraine, or a direct attack on Ukrainian Nationalism.

  4. Population Declination of Ukraine after the Holodomor

  5. Was it a Genocide? • This has been long debated since the start of the Holodomor. • All sides agree on putting Joseph Stalin at fault, but each for different charges. • It is still not agreed upon whether the Holodomor was a genocide. • Robert Conquest, a British historian, claimed that this famine was a deliberate act of mass murder.

  6. Countries and regions that have recognized Holodomor as a genocide

  7. Soviet Denial • Years after the Holodomor ended the Soviet Union Propaganda kept everything they knew about the genocide a secret. • When the citizens started catching on to the government, the Soviet Union resorted to denial. • President Mikhail Kalinin and Foreign Minister Maxim Litvinov told their citizens, and the entire world that none of it happened well into the 1980’s. • This lie, beginning under Stalin was a “successful lie”. • It was successful, not in terms of the impact, but in terms of the length of time they were able to keep this a secret, nearly 50 years.
