Student-led Initiatives on ESD and Co-ops from Universities of Bristol and Edinburgh - A-Ha Moments • ESD Initiatives • Be aware of the difference in speed of action embedding ESD in formal and informal learning – results will be much faster when dealing with student unions and student bodies & could be 2-10 years when dealing with curriculum/academics • Informal learning is just as important as formal learning – lots of skills can be gained by taking part in projects • Students have more power now and will be listened to more about course content, which will be a steep learning curve for academics • Need to have a more explicit focus on learning outcomes • Swap Shop/ Recycling Co-Op Initiatives • When dealing with end of term cleanouts at hall of residence, find a skip provider who will recycle as much as possible • British Heart Foundation are a great charity for dealing with collections; they can arrange to put bins on site and will also often take unwanted furniture • Learning can come from voluntary involvement but also more subliminally by end users of swap shops etc. learning about the process • There can be issues with student volunteer continuity so it’s great to get staff involved too and turn it • into a partnership
