Definition • Turbidity: The cloudiness or haziness of a fluid caused by individual solids that are generally visible to the naked eye.
Normal levels of turbidity (JTU) • A normal level of turbidity of a water body is 25 JTU (Jackson Turbidity Units). • JTU is the outdated and earlier way of measuring turbidity. • There is also a unit system called NTU which is a more accurate method to measure a water’s turbidity. • NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) calls for a 90 degree measurement technique and is formazin based.
Possible Sources from Nature and pollution - Phytoplankton • Sediments from erosion • Re-suspended sediments from the bottom • Waste Discharge • Algae Growth • Urban Runoff
Problems caused by high turbidity • Very high turbid waters can create heated waters because the solid particles absorb heat. • High turbid waters can cause reduction in dissolved oxygen content. • Highly turbidity can kill marine life because it suffocates algae, insects, fish eggs and can even damage fish gills. This usually happens around the point when the materials start settling in the water.
How to reduce Turbidity • Reduce the amount of waste dumped into water bodies. • There isn’t much one can do to prevent high turbidity in water bodies because for the most part, it’s all natural.
