  2. Photo: Franklin, T. (2001). The Ocean Project Established in 1988, The Oceanic Project, is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness about cetacean (whales, dolphins and porpoise) & the ocean environment.

  3. Founded by Trish & Wally Franklin Trish Franklin studies the social & ecological importance of Hervey Bay for humpback whales. Wally Franklin studies the abundance , site-fidelity, residency & migratory of humpback whales using Hervey Bay. Trish and Wally are Members of the Society for Marine Mammology and Scientific Advisers to and Board Members of Whale and Dolphin Watch Australia (WADWA).

  4. Spanning from 1995-2005, thankfully the work continues due to the efforts of individuals who take part in the Oceania Projects Internship Program. Involvement in the project is open to the public and no experience is necessary. About TheOceanicProject’s work. The major effort of The Oceanic Project has been the first phase of a long term study of humpback whales in Hervey Bay.

  5. How it works: Photo identification is the main method of research, however since 2000 slough-skinned samples have been collected for DNA and genetic analysis.

  6. Howitworks. Between 1992 and 2009 all the photo-id field-work and analysis has been undertaken by Trish Franklin. The digital photo-id archive now consists of over 70,000 data images. The Hervey Bay Fluke Catalogue numbers almost 3000 humpback individuals and Trish has accumulated long-term life histories on over 600 individual humpback whales.
