2. Iowa Volunteerism Initiative (I.L.V.I) is a student run initiative that searches for community service opportunities throughout the Iowa City area and offers a convenient way for students to get involved in these opportunities. What is The Iowa volunteerism initiative?

Justice Not Politics is a broad based, nonpartisan coalition of organizations and Iowans across the political spectrum – progressive to conservative; Republicans, Independents and Democrats – all who are committed to protecting Iowa’s courts and our system of merit selection and retention. The Iowa student voice is extremely important in protecting our courts in the upcoming election season. Justice Not Politics can help students organize and raise awareness about the value of our judicial system. 5. Big Brother and Big Sisters of Johnson County helps children reach their potential through professionally supported one-on-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. Student volunteers may participate in several ongoing volunteer opportunities including mentoring a local youth in the community(community based mentoring), mentoring a local youth at an elementary school (School Buddies), or playing sports with a local youth (Sports Buddies). 6. Children of Promise is a mentoring program for youth who have a parent in correctional services or live in situations that put them at risk of not living up to their potential. Children of Promise offers volunteers the opportunity for one-on-one mentoring that matches one youth with one caring, adult mentor. Children of Promise also offers the Youth Leadership Program which is a positive youth development initiative that serves at-risk junior high and high school youth. 7. UAY is looking for mentors for their Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) which matches volunteers with students currently enrolled in junior high or high school. This program is offered to students who are likely to benefit from positive interactions with adult volunteers. AMP asks volunteers to commit to meeting with their students once a week for one year. 8. The Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County LEAD College Prep program is seeking volunteers to tutor Junior High and High School students enrolled in our LEAD program. This program provides weekly academic/homework help, career/academic planning using www.ihaveaplaniowa.gov website, and ACT/SAT study prep help for high school students. 9. West High School runs a weekly tutoring program on Mondays and Tuesdays at the school library from 3:30-4:30. This program is strictly tutoring, not mentoring. Volunteers are likely to tutor different students every week, offering more flexibility than most mentoring relationship. 10. Volunteers help West High School students develop an appreciation for the Constitution and help coach the students for the We the People competition. The class meets Monday and Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:00pm at West High. Attendance at every class is not required. They can be flexible with your schedule. 11. Pathways is designed to prevent premature or unnecessary institutionalization of adults with physical and/or psychological challenges. 12. Systems Unlimited is an Iowa non-profit corporation providing community support services for people with developmental disabilities and families in need. Individuals can volunteer in a variety of ways including becoming a one-on-one companion, or working in public relations, special events, and accounting. Systems unlimited, inc. 13. The mission of the Iowa Children’s museum is to inspire every child to imagine, create, discover, and explore through the power of play. Student volunteers may participate in several one-time and ongoing volunteer opportunities including staffing special events, facilitating museum exhibits, providing general office help, and cleaning the museum. 14. The Shelter House is a non-profit organization that provides housing and supportive services to the homeless of Johnson County. The main causes of homelessness in the Iowa City area can be traced to a lack of affordable housing, low paying jobs, and domestic violence. Shelter House is the county’s only homeless shelter, providing transitional shelter to men, women and children, including the elderyand disabled. 15. Table to Table is a food distribution effort that helps supply local agencies that serve the hungry, homeless, and at-risk population in the Iowa City area. The Table to Table program helps collect and distribute food to those who need it by directly serving local agencies. With help from Table to Table, many agencies can stretch their budgets even farther to serve even more people in need by reducing the need to devote their time and staffing resources to purchasing or collecting food. 16. The Johnson County Crisis Center offers aid to individuals and families facing a wide variety of problems. In the past, students at the University of Iowa College of Law have volunteered at the Crisis Center Food Bank by collecting food to distribute to those in need. The Food Bank provides non-perishable items, as well as produce, bakery, deli, dairy, and hygiene items as they become available through donations. This placement is particularly suited to student organizations/journals to take alternating Friday afternoon shifts. Contact law-clp@uiowa.edu for more info. 17. College student volunteers help serve faculty, staff, patients and families in a variety of care units. Varying degrees of patient contact are available. Orientations take place at the beginning of each semester. Students must commit to volunteer a minimum of three hours, once per week for two semesters, as well as attend an orientation, interview, and participate in a departmental orientation. Students must also complete a simple health screening (similar to the process our staff members go through) and sign a background check consent form before you begin to volunteer. The screening and check are performed at no cost to you. 19. Volunteers are crucial to providing patients with personal attention at Mercy Hospital. Volunteers can choose to be involved in patient and public contact or work behind the scenes. Volunteers are placed according to their interests and qualifications, as well as the needs of the hospital. In the past volunteers have been involved in knitting or crocheting baby caps, assisting with large mailing projects, and helping staff to keep patients feeling comfortable. 20. The Iowa Women’s Foundation is a small, grassroots organization that depends on the energy and talent of volunteers to advance its mission. The goal of IWA is to educate women and girls about programs that may benefit their needs and expand supporters in communities throughout the state of Iowa. There are many opportunities to make a personal contribution, whether intermittently, or on a regular basis. Such contributions include: office volunteers, research assistant, special event planning, public relations, and computer applications. 21. Ever dreamed of donning a bonnet and teaching a classroom of students in an old wooden schoolhouse? Guide tours around a museum? By volunteering at The Johnson County Historical Society you can do these things and so much more! JCHS is a historically-driven, non-profit organization managing sites around the county. JCHS owns multiple sites, including the 1876 Schoolhouse, Plum Grove, and a farm asylum. 22. INHF is a private nonprofit conservation organization working to ensure Iowans will always have beautiful natural areas --- to bike, hike, and paddle – to keep Iowa healthy and vibrant. 23. The beautiful recreation area of Coralville Lake is owned and managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. They always need volunteers for trail maintenance (a great group outing!) and garbage pick up. The park area offers student a great escape from law school stresses. 24. The Macbride Raptor Project is a project aimed at preserving Iowa’s birds of prey and their natural habitat through rehabilitation of sick and injured birds, educational programs for the public, and field research of Iowa’s native raptors. 25. Friends of Hickory Hill Park provides a variety of different volunteering opportunities, from conservation work in the park to preparing mailings and assisting with sales and promotion of the annual FHHP calendar. Most volunteer opportunities occur in Spring and Fall. We can tailor projects to the skill and experience level of your group and can provide supervision and training. 26. IC Humane society is looking for volunteers to raise awareness of animal welfare issues and assist staff at the IC Animal Care & Adoption Center. Volunteers are asked to donate a minimum of 25 hours a year and are required to complete an application, sign a waiver, pass a background check and attend hands-on training classes.
