Earth’s Rotation • Earth rotates (spins) on its own axis. • Earth rotates in 24 – hours • 12 – hours in the light – we call that day time. • 12 – hours in the dark – we call that night time. • Earth rotates from west to east. This means that we spin counterclockwise.
Earth is Titled! • Earth does not go straight up and down. • Earth is titled on its axis about 23o • As Earth rotates on its own axis, it revolves around the Sun. • It takes 365 days for Earth to revolve around the Sun – 1 year. • The way that Earth is tilted makes us have seasons.
Seasons • The seasons happen because of the tilt of Earth’s axis. • The different amounts of sunlight cause different temperatures at locations. • During our summer, the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun. • This makes more direct sunlight, thus, higher temperatures. • During our winter, the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun. • This means less direct sunlight, thus, lower temperatures.
Quick Review • If it is summer in the northern hemisphere, what season would it be in the southern hemisphere? Why? • It would be winter. If the northern hemisphere is pointed towards the Sun, the southern hemisphere must be pointed away from the Sun. When a part of the Earth is pointed away from the Sun, that means less direct sunlight, thus lower temperatures, thus winter.
