6th Grade Courses • Five Required Courses - Reading, ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies • Technology Applications • P.E. or Intro to Athletics • Full Year Electives • Band • Choir • Art • Theater Arts
Academic, Advanced & Accelerated • Academic (on level) = State Curriculum (TEKS) • Academic Classes • Level expected of everyone • Advanced (Reading, ELA, and Math) = State Curriculum (TEKS) • With greater Depth and Complexity • Ability • Effort • Accelerated (math only) = State Curriculum (TEKS compressed) • Covering three years of math in two years • must qualify academically and be willing to work
Electives • All electives meet every day. • Electives are for the entire year. • Students not meeting standard on a STAAR test will be assigned into an intervention class in lieu of the technology elective. • Intervention classes - AMI Math and Reading Strategies
STAAR Sixth graders take • STAAR MATH – May 12th • STAAR READING – May 13th This is not an SSI year like 5th grade but student success and progress is important in determining placement for 7th grade. Students who fail to meet standards will lose one elective and be placed in intervention classes.
What is a typical 6th grade day? School hours are from 7:50am to 3:30pm. • English Language Arts - 45 minutes • Reading – 45 minutes • Math – 45 minutes • Science – 45 minutes • Social Studies – 45 minutes • Physical Education – 45 minutes • Elective – 45 minutes • Technology - 45 minutes • ACE (Achieving Complete Excellence)- 27 minutes • Lunch - 30 minutes
What is new in 6th grade? • Nine (45 min) periods per day with 4 minute passing • lockers in the hall • shared staff with JH - nurse, counselor, 504/testing coordinator, attendance & PEIMS, elective teachers • no assistant principal - contact principal for any issues • new friends from different elementary schools • walk (supervised) to the JH for Band and Choir • secondary (6-12) dress code enforced • attendance and tardies count every class period • 3 different lunch periods (free seating choice) • no recess scheduled - may have some occur during ACE class • Intro to Athletics class choice • ACE (8th period) - 28 minute study period “homeroom” • iPads - issued to students during the day
New Secondary Grading Policy District Grade Weighting and CategoriesGrades 6-860% Summative (assessments and projects), 40% Formative (classwork and homework) Note: Each semester is weighted as follows: Each nine-week: 43%; Semester Exam: 14% Retest Policy If a student fails to achieve a 70 on a major test, he or she may request a retest. A retest will be offered/available after teacher consultation, intervention, and additional student preparation. All missed assignments must be completed prior to retesting (complete all zeros for the material prior to retesting). Students will not be allowed to retest in Advanced courses. Attendance and Tardies New - Attendance and tardies count every class period. The law has two parts. • 90% Rule for course credit - letters sent at 3, 7, 10 days • 10 days missed (excused and unexcused) in a semester requires credit recovery (Saturday School) - This counts per class period. 2. Truancy Law - letters sent at 3, 7, 10 days for unexcused absences - after 10 unexcused absences truancy charges can be filed. *Avoid truancy by sending a note when your child is absent!
ACE Detainment • Ace detainment is a disciplinary action given by a teacher for minor misbehavior (disrupting class). The student will go to a detention class during ACE (8th period). • Parents will be called after the 3rd ACE detainment. • Parents will be asked to come in for a conference on the 4th ACE detainment. Major discipline will be referred to the principal and parents will be called.
