  10. Firefighting ranks consistently in the top 5 most dangerous occupations

  11. There will always be danger in the job

  12. BUT There are preventable accidents in the fire service

  13. Give examples of situations we can make more safe in the fire service

  14. NFPA sets the standard for the fire service to include:

  15. Personal Safety

  16. Common Injuries

  17. Backstrain

  18. List some common causes of backstrain

  19. Slips and Falls

  20. What causes slips and falls??

  21. Safety on the Apparatus

  22. Most common danger is riding on the Apparatus

  23. Safety Tips

  24. Do not dress while apparatus is in motion

  25. Do not ride tailboard

  26. Be in a seat belt

  27. If not in enclosed cab, use hearing protection

  28. Do not stand up while apparatus is in motion

  29. Use handrails to mount and dismount apparatus

  30. Do not use handrails to dismount if apparatus is in contact with electrical wires

  31. Is the scene safe?

  42. Departments have different methods of keeping track of their firefighters

  43. The main issue is to have an accountability system

  44. Accountability guidelines • Used the same at all scenes • All individuals know how to use it • Must account for all individuals at the scene • Will include a tagging system

  45. Training

  46. Amount of training • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requires training at least monthly • Other agencies may also mandate a certain amount of training

  47. Maintaining personal Safety

  48. The firefighter should be in good physical condition2/3 of all firefighters are in poor physical condition
