  2. WHY "YOUTH" LEADERSHIP? To increase awareness of community needs, opportunities, problems, and resources. To gain a greater understanding of contemporary issues through interaction and problem solving with peers, community leaders, and decision makers from all segments of the community. To further enhance communication skills, decision making capabilities, and varying approaches to leadership. To develop the concept of leadership based on active involvement combined with integrity, as an integral part of community responsibility. To investigate career opportunities.

  3. Youth Leadership InstituteMission StatementThe Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) is a program designed for high school juniors who have demonstrated a potential for leadership. Its purpose is to prepare them for constructive leadership, community involvement, and responsible participation in the future of theDecatur area.Funding for this program is provided by AmerenIP, Team Soy Capital, Continental Carbonic Products Inc., Decatur Metropolitan Rotary Club, Richland Community College Foundation and Richland Community College.

YLI Basic Structure: • Sponsors – Help offset program costs • (11) Sessions– begins in August and ends in April August/September - TEAMBUILDING January - EDUCATION/DIVERSITY September - LEADERSHIP ORIENTATION February - BUSINESS October – GOVERNMENT March - HEALTHCARE November - ARTS AND MEDIA March - GRADUATION WORKSHOP & December - SOCIAL SERVICES SERVICE DAY January - RECREATION/BUSINESS DINNER April – GRADUATION • (8) Session Hosts – Community leaders within their respective fields plan their session and serve on the application selection committee • Course component – Course Title:Course Credits:3-0-3 Leadership Development ICCB: PCS 1.1 231001 08 L DEV 110.Y1

Application Eligibility Requirements Applicants must: • Apply during spring of their high school sophomore year. • Be approved by high school principal. • Demonstrate leadership in school and/or community activities. • Have an interest in furthering their knowledge of the Metro-Decatur area. • Have an interest in addressing the issues confronting their peers as well as the overall community. • Commit to full participation in the program. Commitment includes completion of all program assignments. • Be academically sound and maintain throughout the school year. An average “B” or better is recommended because students are excused from school for eight (8) days. • Have their own transportation to and from each session location. • Be prepared to pay a $100 tuition fee if accepted. Limited scholarships are available. • Participants will receive three (3) Richland Community College credits if minimum requirements are met.

YLI Sessions Graduation Dessert Buffet and Student Presentations Students and their families, school personnel, session hosts, and organizations participating in YLI are invited to hear the Community perspective developed by the students from their YLI experiences. Students are also recognized in completing the program and provided with a certificate of participation, group photo and DVD containing copies of all community perspectives and slide show of all pictures taken throughout the year.
