This paraphrase comes from: http://www.garlikov.com/teaching/style.html “Nearly ninety years ago, our ancestors founded this country based on the principles of freedom and equality.  But the current revolt makes us wonder if a nation with such a basis can survive. We are standing on one of the larger battlefields of this war for the purpose of designating part of it as a cemetery for those who died here trying to preserve the republic. 

  2. “That is the right thing to do, of course, but in the big scheme of things, there isn't much we can do to make this ground any more sacred or important than the brave soldiers who fought here did. What they did will be remembered longer than this ceremony will. So what we really need to do is to work hard to finish what they so magnificently started in order that their efforts will not have been wasted ... renewing the principle of freedom and continuing the existence of this blessed country.”
