  1. On the Banks Today’s Goal: • To learn how human activities can cause erosion • To learn that humans are also the solution to erosion • To learn how to prevent excess erosion and sediment

  2. On the Banks • Erosion is a natural process whereby the earth’s surface is broken apart by weathering and the pieces are transported by gravity, wind, or water

  3. On the Banks • Excess erosion results in too much sediment in our streams, lakes, and rivers

  4. On the Banks • Sediment is one of our biggest sources of water pollution

  5. On the Banks • Excess sediment: • Makes it difficult for fish to breathe • Settles to the bottom of streams and smothers fish eggs • Clogs storm sewer pipes which can lead to flooding • Disrupts boating activities by making rivers and lakes more shallow

  6. On the Banks • Vegetation is one of the best, and least expensive ways to prevent erosion Stones and Walls can help too

  7. On the Banks • Weathering is the breaking down or breaking apart of earth materials, such as rock or soil, by wind, water, ice, etc.

  8. On the Banks Which ones are true when soil is in the water and which ones are true when soil stays on the land: Reduces the risk of flooding and makes boating cleaner It’s good for all of us who eat the farmers’ food It’s bad for fishers and boaters It’s Good for Farming It can smother fish eggs Can clog sewer pipes & ditches, which causes flooding It makes it difficult for fish to breathe Good for Farmers Soil in Water Soil on Land Difficult for fish to breathe Good for Farming Smothers fish eggs Good for Farmers Bad for fishers and boaters Good for all of us who eat the Farmers’ food Can clog sewer pipes and ditches, which can cause flooding Less flooding and cleaner boating

  9. On the Banks Which of the following are causes of erosion and which are ways to prevent erosion: High water absorption by plants No erosion controls on construction sites Good erosion controls on construction sites Less Surface Runoff Little Groundwater Infiltration Gentle Hills No-Till Farming Lots of Surface Runoff Low water absorption by plants Good Vegetation Fast-Moving Water Slow-Moving Water Steep Hills Groundwater Infiltration No Vegetation Till Farming Causes of Erosion Erosion Prevention • No Vegetation • Good Vegetation • Steep Hills • Gentle Hills • Fast-Moving Water • Slow-Moving Water • Till Farming • No-Till Farming • Low water absorption • by plants • High water absorption • by plants • Lots of Surface Runoff • Less Surface Runoff • Little Groundwater Infiltration • Groundwater Infiltration • No erosion controls on • construction sites • Good erosion controls on • construction sites
