Asian AmericanHealth Initiative (AAHI) • Established FY 2005 • Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services • Steering Committee of 15 members: Assist - Advise - Advocate • Mission: Todevelop appropriate health programs that meet the need of a diverse group of Asian Americans living in Montgomery County • Programs: • Disease Specific Programs • Health Promoters Program (HPP) • Patient Navigator Program (PNP) • Community Outreach • Health Education Material Development • Social Media

Needs Assessment • Conducted in 2007-2008 in partnership with University of Maryland College Park School of Public Health • One of the first health needs assessments for Asian Americans in Montgomery County, Maryland • Focus groups with 13 different Asian American subgroups including several under-represented communities • Identified a wide array of health needs, barriers to health care utilization, and provided priorities and recommendations that the County might consider for improving existing programs and future planning.

  8. Recommendations • Increase knowledge and raise awareness of health promotion and disease prevention measures • Continue to expand access to quality health care services • Invigorate and expand partnerships and collaborations • Data collection and reporting

  13. Targets in Action: An Innovative Program Model Hepatitis B Education, Screening, & Vaccination Program: A Pilot Project in the Chinese American Community in Montgomery County, Maryland

Burden of Disease • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes 80% of all primary liver cancer worldwide and is the 3rd leading cause of cancer death among Asian Americans • Prevalence rates of HBV among Asians around 10-15% compared with less than 1% among mainstream US population • Of 1.5 million HBV carriers in US, approx. half are Asian • Hepatitis B is the most common chronic infectious disease in the world and is considered 50-100 times more infections than AIDS Sources: World Health Organization, http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs204/en/. Community Need • Recommendation from 2008 Needs Assessment: • Expand health promotion and disease prevention programs to raise awareness and level of knowledge of health issues that disproportionately affect Asian Americans, including hepatitis B • Service gaps in County • Lack of screening, education, vaccination, and treatment options • Only screening option is through an STD Clinic • Services underutilized by Asian Americans (< 5%) • Inadequate physician knowledge about hepatitis B screening and vaccination

Purpose and Goals Education • Screening •Vaccination •Treatment Referral Purpose: To provide hepatitis B education, screening and referrals to vaccination or treatment for Asian American adults through a pilot project with the Chinese American community in Montgomery County, MD • Goals: • To increase knowledge and awareness about hepatitis B among Chinese American adults • To increase access to hepatitis B screening and vaccination for ChineseAmerican adults • To engage the community and strengthen capacity to address hepatitis B-related issues • To enhance data collection of hepatitis B among ChineseAmericans
