Raelynns Boutique makes prom dresses in Indiana a priority RaeLynn's keeps a registry of prom dressesso that — heaven forbid — no one arrives at their prom with a "twin" across the room. For every prom tuxedo rental, $5 is donated back to the student's school. McDaniel took a timeout recently to talk with the Indianapolis Star about her business. Question: How did you get in this?Answer: I found out I wasn't a stay-at-home mom, and since I had worked in a bridal shop, I started thinking about prom dresses. Q: Who is RaeLynn?A: Bridgett and I were calling each other by our first and middle names one day, and we got to thinking how our middle names would sound together. Q: What was your prom like?A: Puffy sleeves, taffeta sleeves, organza skirts. Back in the day, there were no patterns on dresses, no low cutouts. Everything was more conservative. Q: What's hot this year?A: There is a comeback in peacock and mermaid dresses, feathers, ruffles and high-low, with the hem short in the front and longer in the back. Tuxedos are less boxy . . . a more athletic fit. Q: How about accessories?A: Big, bold dangle earrings; platform heels; chunky bracelets and fun flowers in the hair. Q: What are some of the Southside prom themes in recent years?A: Cinderella, Casino, Mardi Gras. Some girls buy their dresses according to the themes. Q: How many employees do you have?A: It's just me and Bridgett, with 18 part-time high school and college girls. I never hire more than one or two from each school. Q: How far do your customers travel?A: They come from as far as Kansas, South Dakota, out East. Some girls attending the Super Bowl with their families came in; it amazes me because they like the small "mom-and-pop" stores. Q: Who is your most famous customer?A: We dressed Katie Stamm of Seymour when she was Miss America. Q: What's coming up for next year?A: We will see a return to classic styles, off-the-shoulder, one-shoulder, jewel tones … a more sophisticated look.
