Making Disciples 3 Matthew chapter 28 v 16 – 20 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (NIV)
becoming students attached to a teacher • someone who’s baptised and behaves like Jesus • Jesus also said, “If you keep on obeying what I have • said, you truly are my disciples.” (John 8 v31) • “If you love me you will obey my commands.” (John 14 v15) • What are the commands of Jesus?
WHAT ARE THE COMMANDS OF JESUS? Come follow me. (Matthew 4 v19, 9 v9) Sermon on the Mount But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! So if you are about to place your gift on the altar and remember that someone is angry with you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. Make peace with that person, then come back and offer your gift to God. When you pray, fast and give...do it privately and not to show off. Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” (Matt 9 v 38) Go out and preach the good news, heal the sick, cast out demons...(10 v7-) I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. (10 v16) If any of you want to be my disciples you must forget yourself, carry your cross and follow me. (16 v24) If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. (18 v15) “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?.... Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! (18 v21-)
Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” (19 v14) Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” (22 v21) The greatest commandment is this.... “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength...and love your neighbour as you love yourself.” (22 v37) Jesus took bread...“Take this and eat it, for this is my body....And he took a cup of wine....“Each of you drink from it... (Matt 26 v26-) Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising...and teaching. (Matt 28 v19-) Love one another as I have loved you (John 13 v 34, 15 v12, 17) Remain/abide in me, and I will remain/abide in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. (John 15 v 4) Remain/Abide in my love (v9) You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit... (John 15 v16)
How would we teach Jesus’ followers • to obey everything he commanded? • study his commands • model his commands • critique each other • equip, support, be accountable to one another as • we live them out • forgive and help one another when we failed • Wouldn’t it be great to belong to a church like this?
