  1. An Introduction to DLMS Presented By SP Shukla (PM-MDAS)

  2. Understanding DLMS/COSEM Device Language Message specification - a generalized concept for abstract modelling of communication entities. It is maintained by the DLMS User Association located in Switzerland and has been adopted by the IEC into the IEC 62056 series of standards. COSEMstands for Companion Specification for Energy Metering, this specification specifies Interface Model and Communication Protocol for data exchange with energy meters and usable for all Energy Industry area like Power, Gas, Water and Oil. (In other words it defines the Transport and Application Layers of the DLMS protocol.)

  3. Understanding DLMS/COSEM The DLMS/COSEM Specification follows a three step approach: Setp1, Modeling: This covers the identification of the appropriate object codes (known as OBIS Codes) that identify the specific quantity and then choose the appropriate Interface Class that represents that quantity.

  4. Step2, Messaging: This covers the mapping of available services to Protocol Data Unit. • Step3, Transportation: This covers the transportation of messages through the communication channel.

  5. COSEM Object identification System (OBIS) • OBIS stands for Object Identification System: - OBIS names are used for • Identification of COSEM objects for communication • Identification of COSEM objects data for LCD display on Meter. • OBIS uses 6 value groups in a hierarchical structure.

  6. Classification of Meter under Indian Companion Specification

  7. Logical Structure of Meter

  8. Classification of Parameters

  9. Example OBIS Display - TIME

  10. Example OBIS Display - Voltage
