Capote was born and raised in New Orleans. He spent summers with his aunt in Alabama in the same town as Harper Lee and was the model for Lee’s “Dill” in To Kill a Mockingbird.
At 18 he moved to New York City and worked for The New Yorker magazine. • He published his first book Other Voices, Other Rooms in 1948.
In 1966, Capote published his “nonfiction novel” In Cold Blood after researching a violent murder in Kansas. This book was the beginning of a new type of American literature.
As Capote’s celebrity grew, he fashioned his image as an eccentric and his life was widely reported to the media. • Capote died in Los Angeles, California on August 25, 1984. • According to the coroner’s report the cause of death was “liver disease complicated by phlebitis and multiple drug intoxication.”
