Part 1 – PCQE 1 P: J. gives outward impression of being v. orthodox / devout follower of the Party. C: When Winston sees her during the Two Minutes Hate, she wears: Q: “A scarlet sash, emblem of the Junior Anti-Sex League, was wound several times round the shape of her overalls” (p7) E: Sash gives outside world impression J. is celibate. Having sex not looked upon favourably by Party, so her abstinence reflects devotion to the Party and its ideas.
Part 1 – PCQE 2 P: J. gives the outward impression of being v. orthodox / devout follower of the Party. C: Her actions described during the Two Minutes Hate: Q: “begun crying out ‘Swine! Swine! Swine!’ and suddenly she picked up a heavy Newspeak dictionary and flung it at the screen.” (p11) E: Demonstrates an apparent hatred of Goldstein, reflecting devotion to the Party by hatred of anything that opposes it.
Part 1 – PCQE 3 P: W. believes J. is spying on him. C: W. discovers J. following him through the proletarian district. Q: “There was no doubting any longer that the girl was spying on him.” (p78) E: After seeing J. taking interest in his habits on several occasions, W. concludes that the only reason she can be doing so is because she is a spy / member of the thought police.
