Leeds background UKRDS - UK Research Data Service (2008) • http://www.ukrds.ac.uk/ - feasibility of national shared research data service • helped raise profile at Leeds • identify a range of people interested in RDM JISC Building capacity project (2010-11) • RDM identified as a Leeds strategic priority where JISC outputs could help • identified key JISC projects e.g. ADMIRAL (now DataFlow – included in our current RDM project) Research Data Management: Leeds Perspective
EPSRC Policy Framework on Research Data • Key driver to push RDM agenda forward • Leeds response included: • Research Data Steering Group (chaired by PVC for R&I) • Research Data Working Group (chaired by Performance, Visual Arts and Communication Pro-Dean for Research) - both group have researcher and cross-service membership - groups’ Terms of Reference online http://bit.ly/KNgAcP Building EPSRC requirements – and other funders’ into planning work for the RDM service Research Data Management: Leeds Perspective
Draft Research Data Management Policy • High level, aspirational • Heavily influenced by the University of Edinburgh policy • Leeds draft policy available online - http://bit.ly/MgPYCO • Many institutions working on RDM • Many willing to share experience • Policy needs to be fleshed out in practice • JISC RoaDMaP project will help • Build on existing good practice • extend across all disciplines Research Data Management: Leeds Perspective
RoaDMaP • JISC Funded Project in the Research Data Management Programme • Institutional Infrastructure Strand • Investigate the requirements for and pilot the implementation of an institutional research data management infrastructure • 18 months from Jan 1st 2012 Research Data Management: Leeds Perspective • Partners • DCC (Digital Curation Centre) • F5 (IT vendor for digital storage) • National Instruments(Labview laboratory experiment data capture software)
RoaDMaP aims to: • Develop University of Leeds policies for Research Data Management. • Undertake requirements analysis for pre-, live- and post-award case studies • Pilot DMP Online, and define requirements for DMP enhancement • Define and implement training strategy. • Pilot virtualised storage • Pilot the use of an RDMS and develop 'integration' with data capture equipment • we will trial the DataFlow data management infrastructure • implement repository designed for data or build on existing repository (Eprints?) • ‘data catalogue’ – record of research data, regardless of location Research Data Management: Leeds Perspective
RoaDMaP • Staff • Rachel Proudfoot, Project Manager • Brenda Phillips, Project Officer • Tim Banks, leading on DMP • Graham Blyth, leading on repositories • Active input from researchers, Staff and Departmental Development Unit, Information Systems Services (central IT), Faculty IT, Research Support • More information http://library.leeds.ac.uk/roadmap-project • Possible collaborators • White Rose Consortium e.g. opportunities for shared training and support, shared infrastructure Research Data Management: Leeds Perspective
