Definition OR… To put it more simply… • a kind of literary or artistic work used to designate the types or categories into which literary works are grouped according to form, technique, or, sometimes, subject matter. The related term genre fiction refers several types of popular fiction such as thrillers, westerns, mysteries, romance novels, and science fiction. Each type has its own set of standard characteristics that most novels of the type exhibit.

  4. GENRE is the type of writing/story found in a text.

  5. What are the two main genres? • Fiction • Nonfiction What are some sub-genres you know? Biography Autobiography Short story Drama Poetry Fantasy Science fiction Realistic fiction Historical fiction Informational text And MANY more…

  6. Fiction • Story that is false

  7. Nonfiction • Fact-based texts • NOT false!

  8. Fantasy • Fiction • Magic is often used; no explanation about how these things happen • Example: Talking animals, Harry Potter, Twilight, Uglies, etc.

  9. Science fiction • Fiction • All kinds of things are possible; everything can be explained through science • Example: Star Trek, ???

  10. Realistic fiction • Fiction based on reality • Example: BlufordHigh series, The Outsiders, many mysteries, etc.

  11. Mystery • Story that needs to besolved with clues. • Examples: Sherlock Holmes, Nancy Drew, The DaVinci Code

  12. Historical fiction • Fiction set in historical times; most of the characters are fictional, but the writer can add characters who really lived at the time too. • Example: Dark Water Rising

  13. Narrative Nonfiction • Nonfiction • Told like a story with characters • Example: Newspaper reports

  14. Informational text • Non-fiction; fact-based texts • Examples: Dictionary, stat books, etc.

  15. Biography • Documents the life of a person • Examples?

  16. Autobiography • Written by the person it is about • Examples?

  17. Drama • A play (screenplay) with stage directions and dialogue • Examples?

  18. Short story • Brief piece with all elements of plot • Examples?

  19. Poetry • Emphasis on rhythm and the sound of the words • Usually formatted differently than other kinds of text • Examples?
