What are numerals? When we think about numbers, we basically think of 1, 2, 3, ….., right? But I’m here to prove that there’s more to it than just numbers. Numerals are numbers and numbers are digits that you can count stuff with, like how much money you have or how many types of foods you are not so fond of.
What is a numeral system? A numeral system is a system of number symbols. It should have: • A set of numerals • Every number should be different OR a same symbol no matter where it is in an equation [like 2 is always 2, no matter were it is] • Show the mathematical structure of the number (like, 5 could be 2 + 3 = 5).
What are some examples? I think the Tibetan number system looks most like the European number system, don’t you think?
Examples from History Some historic examples of numeral systems are • Mayan numeral system, which has • a dot for one and a horizontal line for 5, • Roman numeral system, which has • I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50, C for 100, D for 500 and M for 1,000, or • Egyptian numeral system, which has • a vertical line for 1, • an arch for 10, • a curl for 100, • a lily for 1,000, • a finger for 10,000, • a tadpole or a frog for 100,000 and • a man with his hands raised for 1,000,000 or many.
Recent examples • Binary - uses 1 and 0 only. For example, “Hello” in binary is 0100100001100101011011000110110001101111. • Hexadecimal - uses 0,1,…,9 and A, … , F “Hello” in Hexadecimal is 48656c6c6f Computers use these numeral system to do everything, like open Google Chrome or download stuff and save our files and videos.
Which systems is it related to? Numeral systems could be related to: • Maths system • Writing system • Operating / Processing system • Timekeepers • Economic system • Finances / Trading / Monetary systems
What if there is no proper numeral system? Your equations could have an entirely wrong answer, which is very consequential in some cases. You could get mixed up between what is which number. No one will know how to pay for things that they want to buy.
