Structured fluids from reduced symmetry moleculesAntal I. Jákli, Kent State University, DMR 0964765 A. Sub-nanometer resolution of cryo-TEM imaging of smectic layers in the smectic and nematic phases of bent-core liquid crystals was demonstrated. The results provide the first direct evidence of smectic clusters on length scales of 30-50 nm in a nematic liquid crystal. C. Magneto-optical measurements on a rod-shape LC with smectic clusters show biaxial order due to a coupling between the tensor nematic and the smectic order parameters. B. By X-ray we have analyzed nanostructures of dozens of nematic liquid crystal materials from Y and H-shape molecules and compared them with those made from bent-shape molecules. SmA N
Structured fluids from reduced symmetry moleculesAntal I. Jákli, Kent State University, DMR 0964765 12 Students (6 women and 3 undergraduates) were involved in the project. Nick Diorio came back from his one year deployment in Iraq to continue his PhD work. At the latest International Liquid Crystal Conference held in Mainz, Germany 2 invited and 2 oral talks, and a number of posters were presented from the project. In frame of NSF ROA program two undergraduate students (Therese Albon and Matt Schmithenner), together with their professor (Shila Grag) from Wooster College did summer research at Kent State.
