  2. Rule 1 • A sentence fragment may lack a subject, a verb, or both. • Jumped across the room. • The entire sixth grade class. • Across town on the subway.

  3. Rule 2 • A fragment may sometimes be corrected by correct punctuation. • I enjoy swimming. Especially in the summer.

  4. Rule 3 • Fragments may incorrectly contain the infinitive or participle form of a verb. • Harry hurrying all day long. • Erin to be the secretary of the group.

  5. Rule 4 • A run-on sentence is two or more complete sentences written as though they were one sentence.

  6. Rule 4.a. • Two or more sentences may not be written without punctuation marks or conjunctions between them. • We have a long weekend we are so excited! (incorrect)

  7. 4.a. Corrections… • We have a long weekend. We are so excited! • We have a long weekend; we are so excited! • We have a long weekend, and we are so excited.

  8. Run-on rules 4.b. • Two or more sentences may not be connected with a comma. (This is known as a “comma splice.”) • Incorrect example: I am hungry, it’s time for lunch.

  9. 4.b. Corrections: • I am hungry. It’s time for lunch. • I am hungry; it’s time for lunch. • I am hungry because it’s time for lunch.

  10. Run-on rules 4.c. • A comma is used before a coordinating conjunction joining two main clauses. • Incorrect example: It is Friday and I have to work late. • Correct example: It is Friday, and I have to work late.
