ONTACWG within SICoP The Ontology and Taxonomy Coordinating Working Group is a a committee within the Semantic Interoperability Community of Practice (SICoP) to provide a mechanism for voluntary coordination of all activities within the Federal Government and among other interested parties, in developing Knowledge Classification and Representation systems such as ontologies, taxonomies, thesauri, and graphical knowledge representations and ideally to develop a Common Semantic Model (COSMO) Note: SICoP is a SIG within the Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG) sponsored by the Best Practices Committee of the Chief Information Officers Council, (CIOC)

  3. ONTACWG Work Plan • Ontologies etc. Registry • Substantive work on ontologies:Contribute to mapping upper level ontologies • Formulate an agenda for work on ontologies, esp. in the Federal government • Information sharing on ontology work

Ontologies etc. Registry • ONTACWG to work with NCOR • Difference from existing registries, such as Stanford Knowledge Zone • More detailed metadata, including evaluation, possible (not required) • All kinds of Knowledge Classification Systems or Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) • ONTACWG will work on registering many KOS used in the Federal Government

  5. Ontologies etc. Registry Step1. Collect data on desired metadata elements and on existing registries Step2. Make a table comparing the registries Step3. Group meeting on the list of metadata elements to be recommended to NCOR

Substantive work on ontologiestoward a Common Semantic Model (COSMO) Overall approach: Connect domain ontologies to upper-level ontologies (ULO) to get better handle on ULO relationships • Revise UMLS semantic network (Olivier Bodenreider, NLM, with possible input from other members) • Analyze the FEA DRM in a similar manner (volunteer sought, Univ. of Maryland student available in spring) • Analyze DoD Core Taxonomy • Examine the higher levels of the domain ontologies to determine overlap to work toward a Common Semantic Model (COSMO)

  7. Agenda for work on ontologies, esp. in the Federal government • Analyzing other domain ontologies with respect to one of the upper level ontologies • Exploring methods for constructing mappings for interoperability • Sharing ideas for exploratory or substantive work that could lead to funded work by ONTAWG members or others.
