  2. What we will talk about? • We will give you a brief overview first of what conflicts we are talking about. • Then we will show you some cases where water conflicts have been quite serious. exiledonline.com/water-wars-billionaire-farmers-scheming-to-privatize-californias-water-are-under-attack/

  3. Water conflicts? • Water conflicts are disputes or wars triggered or fueled by competing access to water resources by countries, states, or groups. A wide range of water conflicts appear throughout history, though rarely are traditional wars waged over water alone.

  4. The Nile • The worlds longest river, used to help produce its ancient civilizations. • Now Egypt or “the gift of the Nile” is defending its historic rights. (so they say) • Egypt now believes it should be allowed to extract more water from the Nile than any other country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egypt So basically Egypt wants all the other country’s to…. Heck

  5. Negotiations 1 • The negotiations were quick and easy. • Britain in 1929 represented east African colonies. • There for they chose for the people. • They simply gave Egypt rights to veto upstream projects that would affect the water share. • What do we mean by veto? http://dontknow09.wordpress.com/category/about-dont-know/dimitra-travel/

  6. Negotiations 2 • Now fast forwarding to 1959! • Egypt signs another accord with Sudan. • The deal included Egypt getting a staggering 87% of the Niles flow. • Sudan would then take the other 13% of the water…… Leaving Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda, all to fend for them selves. (these countries have fought for 13 years on this subject) http://www.chesapeake.va.us/services/depart/com-ser/events.shtml

  7. What will happen? • "We now have more time to negotiate the controversial issues between the countries: Egypt and Sudan on one side and the other seven countries on the other," says Ms Omar. • But she adds there is "no way" Egypt will allow a reduction of its water quota. • Several Nile countries are among the worlds poorest nations, there is already a long history of conflict between them. • There for the chance of more conflict breaking out over water is increasingly probable.

  8. Now onto…

  9. Arab Israeli conflicts • What was the 6 day war? • A war fought in 6 days, initiated by Israeli forces. • It was also swiftly ended by the Israeli's as the outcome was a swift and decisive Israeli victory. Israel took effective control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria. (1967) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-Day_War

  10. Why is this important? • The six day war was believed to be started over…just guess…

  11. WATER!

  12. Why Israel needs water. • Any country needs water to survive and develop. In Israel's history, it has needed water to make feasible the influx of huge numbers of Jewish immigrants.

  13. Negotiations • Syria wants an Israeli withdrawal to 5 June 1967 borders, allowing Syria access to the Jordan and Yarmouk rivers. Israel wants to use boundaries dating back to 1923 and the British Mandate, which give the areas to Israel. • By contrast, the Jordan-Israel treaty of 1994 produced notable agreement on use of wells in the Wadi Araba area in the south and sharing the Yarmouk in the north. • As we can see here at least some • sort of agreement was met. http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/comm440-540/busmet.gif
