UCSF Cores Portal – a project of CTSI Translational Technology Resources & Virtual Home Mini Kahlon, Robert Smith, Kathleen Cameron
Cores Portal – Process Overview • Identify, Engage, Get information about Cores – Robert Smith • Key information: • Name, Location, Core category, Services available, Contact Information • Design simple database and web portal to access and search information – Kathleen Cameron
Next Steps & Vision • Improve portal based on feedback from YOU. • Move towards decentralized management • Integrate with a more complete ‘virtual home’ for researchers • Sync with national efforts
Brief Background • The “2007 CTSI-TTR Core Facilities Coordination Questionnaire” was carefully designed by the TTR Program to be as inclusive as possible • It was widely distributed and made available online to Core Directors and Managers beginning July 31, 2007 • A total of 76 Core Facilities responded
Key Findings • Fred has already addressed several ways the CTSI (and, in particular, the TTR Program) will reach out to Cores in his presentation earlier this morning. • Elizabeth and Teri will deliver an interactive presentation focused on top Core challenges and needs later this afternoon • I will speak to some of the other key data collected via the questionnaire that will not be part of their respective presentations.

CTSI’s Core Portal & Core Facilities Database In response to the question: Does your Core have a Web site? 70% - Responded Yes; 30% Responded No And, many of those who responded in the affirmative acknowledged that a majority of content on their Web site is currently out of date. There exists a very real need for greater visibility and exposure of the unique services and equipment that our Cores offer. One means by which to accomplish this is to create a Core Facilities Database; one component of a larger vision known now as the “CTSI Core Portal”, which will serve our immediate campus community and beyond. Kathleen Cameron will now briefly discuss these aspects…
Core Portal Design • Development was focused on 2 use case scenarios: • Returning users • New users
Your Feedback is Valuable • This portal was developed in a flexible manner so that it can evolve as information needs change. • Managers can help inform the quality of the content and how clients typically ask questions when looking for Core services and/or equipment. • The client perspective will help inform usability.
