  1. Do Now • Something to start the week off on a positive footing

  2. Homework due Thursday • 1. Re-read from the text pages 935 – 939. You MUST read, summarize each section for example on page 935 Skin Cancer – summarize that section • 2. If you owe the research paper – All five paragraphs, with a title page and two sources for a bibliography. • Both of these should already be completed. If not they are due Thursday (the research paper will be marked late)

  3. Today • 1. Put on goggles, apron & get gloves (we will put them on once we actually do the lab). • 2. You MUST You are to re-read the procedure for the Seed lab. Once you have completed reading, wait for more instructions. • 3. What are we supposed to do for the lab today? • 4. Go do it, bring your plants to your table to do add the herbicide.

  4. Review of Integumentary • What is the largest organ in the body? • Your skin • It also, causes roughly 85% of the dust in a home. Why? • We are continually shedding old skins which creates dust (dandruff, dry skin,…)

  5. Integumentary system functions • The Integumentary system includes the following: • Skin • Hair • Nails • These continue to grow even after the person has died. • These parts of the Integumentary System have many functions. • They serve as a barrier to prevent infection, keep one warm (think about getting a short hair cut), produces vitamin D, and collects information for the brain to analyze and react (the skin will sense the heat or cold).

  6. The Skin • The skin has multiple layers • The outer layer is the epidermis which has two layer also. • The first is made up of dead skin. • Below the dead skin layer is the layer of living / new cells, They grow and divide rapidly (remember the dust!). Once every 4 to 6 weeks a new layer is created. • Part of what is made here is Keratin. It is fibrous and tough • Within the epidermis is melanocytes. They produce the dark pigment called melanin. • Melanin absorbs ultraviolet light (UV). This is why you tan

  7. The Skin • The dermis is the next layer of skin, just below the epidermis. • This is where glands, collagen (fibrous material), blood vessels, nerve endings, hair follicles,…. are all found • Sweat glands and sebaceous glands (an oily substance) called sebum. This keeps the collagen flexible. • Hair – question do dogs have hair or fur? What is the difference?

  8. Fur vs. Hair

  9. Hair & nails • Hair covers just about the entire body. • The hair on your head keeps in your body warmth. Which is why it is important to wear a hat in the winter time. You could lose up to 80% 0f your body heat through your head. • It also prevents exposure to UV light. • Hair follicles are the source of hair growth • Finger & toe nails grow from a nail root.

  10. Skin problems • Acne occurs when the hair follicle is blocked by dead skin cells. • Bacteria and oil build up causing pus pockets. • Hives occurs when the body responds to an allergic reaction. The body releases a histamine which causes blood vessels to open. • Taking Benadryl reverses it. Benadryl is an anti-histamine

  11. In class now • Parents (and students), what is the largest organ in the body? What function(s) does it serve? • The answer is your skin. Yes it is an organ. • The skin (hair, & nails) serve as a barrier to prevent infection, keep one warm (think about getting a short hair cut), produces vitamin D, and collects information for the brain to analyze and react (the skin will sense the heat or cold). • We will be making the connection between genetics and certain types of skin conditions such as cancer / melanoma • The first type, Basal Cell Carcinoma, the next two are forms of Melanoma (the second one was an extreme case) and finally, hives (caused by an allergic reaction to something)
