Some ideas • A 2006 Leunig essay on nationalism and diversity. • What are some of the others? • Claims we shouldn’t just be tolerant of our differences, we should “actually embrace and enjoy its glorious detail and diversity…” since it is “our best chance for an intelligent and peaceful future.”

Leunig’s language “We would be wise to stop staring out to see and turn and face the facts of the land.” “It is wrong and futile to to imagine we can make newcomers conform and be more like ‘us’.” • His POV is clear as he argues for a more inclusive mindset. • He closes with a challenge to the reader. “The spirit of place… can be relied on to distinguish us, console us… heal us… But only if we have sufficient openness and innocence to allow it.”

Perspectives • Geoff Davies thinks it is a beat up. • Liberals think it is a conspiracy. • H/S Miranda Devine called it “a blight on Australia.” • H/S editorial called it a “fiasco.” • Michael Anderson said the group has decided to reclaim their sovereignty over Australia. "We will take the steps necessary to make that issue and make the government talk to us," Mr Anderson said. • Warren Mundine (elder) “The words were pretty timid… He echoed words I would have echoed.”

However, it was time it was disbanded, he said.” • He actually said: "I can understand why the tent embassy was established all those years ago. I think a lot has changed for the better since then. I think the indigenous people of Australia can be very proud of the respect in which they are held by every Australian and yes, I think a lot has changed since then and I think it probably is time to move on from that."

Your task • Prompt: Experience and emotion can affect your reality. • Write a letter to Leunig in response to his essay ‘A picture of innocence.” You must explore the big ideas suggested by the prompt (the Qs you answered on Tuesday). • Use recent events as evidence for your views. • You may also draw on personal experience and historical context to show that you are “intelligent and peaceful.” • You may draw on anything you found on the wiki if it is relevant (quotes etc.)
