  4. ASSIST ENTREPRENEURS/BUSINESS • Entrepreneur Support –Assisted 35 business clients with business plans, funding applications, marketing and info. Four businesses received funding support. Value: ~ $70,000 & 3-4 jobs supported • Workshops–10 training seminars including PARO Circle, Finding the Money, Mining & Funder’s Forum, BIA Business Luncheon, Algoma Power and Youth Training Sessions • ~90people attended • Est. Value: $20,000

ASSIST EXISTING BUSINESS A Snapshot • Accessed funding from SSMIC Research Fund - $5,800 • Regional Funders’ Forum - 12 speakers and over 50 people • PARO – 1st Loan Circle Formed • Information Sharing - Funding Booklet • Wawa Restaurant Guide – distributed to Motels • Assist 3 New Businesses - Locations, Permits , Marketing

YOUTH ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAM MINE YOUR OWN BUSINESS • Provincial Grant of $29,000 of $58,000 project – 46 wks • Youth 15-29 exposed to businesses that serve mining sector • Website, How-To Guides, Workshops on how to start a business mainly held at High Schools in Sept/Feb • Dreamers and Doers Business Plan Challenge - $2,000 • Sponsored by Prodigy, Recognized by EDAC Award • Two youth business plans approved for NOHFC funding! 42 Doer and 16 Dreamer Entries

MINING MATTERS COMPLETED - April 15 & 16, 2013 • Provided youth & teachers with resources and training on Earth Science & Mining Basics – English & French • Informed youth and residents about career opportunities in mining at open house (+50 attended) • Dr. Dodds from Augustine Guest Speaker • Cost - $10,000 (half normal price) • Funds Raised - $6,500 • Evaluations Very Positive

WAWA & AREA MINING STUDY • Increase local economic impact from area mines • Identify service gaps and opportunities • Develop action plan to assist business meet demand • Interviewed Mines & Business • Completed Study December • Opportunities Identified • Set of Recommendations Cost: $80,000 Funding: $72,000 (90%)

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT • Northwest Immigration Portal Partnership • Area Job Postings –Social Media, Website • Algoma Workforce Investment Committee • Regional Labour Task Force – MTCU Funding App. $168,000 Skills Inventory • MEDT Funding for Youth Training - $80,000 of$160,000 cost plus ADSAB$15,000, SECFDC $5,000 Skills & labour shortages are among the greatest threats to future mining sector growth.   16. 2013 STATISTICS • Increase in web traffic – 30% over 2012 (2 websites) • 66% increase in calls (more programs) • Social Media– Facebook (460611), Twitter (269351), Linked-In (235346) = Total 964  1308(36%) • Entrepreneurial/business support inquiries up • Serious investor inquiries low but increase in out-of-town persons looking to relocate • E-mail inquiries always increasing!

  19. 2013 RETURN ON INVESTMENT Council provided $150,000 in 2013, thus the estimated return on the initial investment is; For every $1 contributed to the EDC more than $4 was leveraged. • Does not include indirect, unknown or spin-offs • Difficult to measure the full return on investment since many services provided difficult to assign monetary value • Not all clients share information

EDC 2014 OBJECTIVES GOAL – BUILD SKILLED WORKFORCE • MEDT Youth Fund – Budget $160,000 Funding $80,000 • Youth (15-29) Not In School or Working Full-Time • Essential Skills and Basic Employment Training for 40 Youth • Essential Workforce Skills and Ten Certificates • Two 20 Week Intakes – April and September • FREE– Financial Support Provided inc. $500 Graduation • Strong Partnership - ADSAB Ontario Works, MFN, North Algoma Literacy, REHC, Confederation College, SECFDC SPSYouth Employment Skills Training Program
