Fukushima FLEX Considerations • What is FLEX ? • In the wake of Fukushima, NRC established the need for DIVERSE AND FLEXIBLE COPING STATEGIES (FLEX) • NEI (Nuclear Energy Institute) created IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE 12-06
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • FLEX CONSIDERATIONS - need water - need electricity - need portability • FLEX SPECIFICATIONS - in process (not yet finalized)
Fukushima FLEX Considerations EVOLUTION OF FLEX OFFERING BY FAIRBANKS MORSE
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • ANGRA 2 has been operating since 2000 and has has (4) EDG’s + (4) 870KW engine+generator+speedincreaser+pump • ANGRA 3 is under construction and needs the same
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • Existing Angra Unit 2 equipment is obsolete • FM has been solicited to provide replacements for Angra Unit 3
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • FM currently working on a government program that uses a 1MW genset that meets waterproof and high shock (70g) requirements
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • FM also working on commercial pumping project in South America that pumps crude oil over a mountain range to a sea port
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • FM extended these basic arrangements to meet the Angra configuration requirements
Fukushima FLEX Considerations ANGRA DESIGN CONSIDERATION • Building designed to withstand flooding and has limited waterproof access openings (12’ x 12’)
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • EQUIPMENT NEEDS TO GET SMALLER • Answer - MODULARIZATION
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • 6 cylinder OP (50 OP’s currently in nuclear service)
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • 6 cylinder ALCO (30 ALCO’s currently in nuclear service)
Fukushima FLEX Considerations 8 cylinder ALCO (30 in nuclear service)
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • Modular configuration allows ability to MIX-AND-MATCH as desired for: - type engine - size engine - size generator - size pump - auxiliary configuration
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • Modular arrangement allows multiple configurations to suit varying demands at each site - engine+generator - engine+ pump - engine+generator+pump - 1MW-3MW
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • In addition to modular capability, FM offering also provides the following: • QA (ISO or NQA-1) • Qualifications (seismic/shock) • Waterproof/Resistant
Fukushima FLEX Considerations • FM will provide either an engineered package (to customer specs) or will provide a pre-engineered package (to FM specs)
