LGBT Tobacco Disparity • The population of Wisconsin is 5,726,398 • There are 286,320 people ( or 5% of the Wisconsin population*) who are LGBT • About 7.25% of all smokers in Wisconsin – 86,769 people – Are LGBT • This means that 5% of the population of Wisconsin contributes 7.25% of all the smokers in the state. * 5% represents a very conservative estimate of the LGBT population
Why do LGBT People smoke more than the general population? • Minority Stress • Tobacco Industry targeting • Bars, clubs, and festivals as social gathering spaces
