  1. Calculting Self Employed Brett Judd Utah Department of Technology Services Arlington, VA – October 10, 2018

  2. Self Employed : • To get a complete representation of the Total employment count in your state • PS uses industry codes 006010 and 000671 • Usually not done on the industry projections side since time series data can be hard to obtain. Some analysts are using ACS or PUMS data for this (ask Anthony). Resources on the support site.

  3. Three ways to proceed 1. Have your own ICT data and staffing pattern. (Usually not the case) 2. Have your own ICT data but need a staffing pattern. (Sometimes) 3. Do not have your own ICT data or staffing pattern (Most likely)

  4. Scenario 1 – Have your own ICT and staffing pattern data • SE is treated like any other industry and processed the same. • Do not need to use the national SE ratios. • Do not need to run the Calculate Self Employed module in OP.

  5. Scenario 2 – Have your own ICT data but need a staffing pattern • Need both the base and projected values for the ICT. Have two options for the staffing pattern. • First option – use the national staffing pattern for 006010 and the Copy Staffing Pattern module. OR • Second option – use the Calculate Self Employed module to create the staffing pattern. (Do not check the Create ICT records).

  6. Need ICT data for base and projection

  7. Copy SE Staffing Pattern from U.S.

  8. Calculate Self Employed but do not create ICT data

  9. Scenario 2 Final Steps • Calculate Projections for the SE industry (only SE) since you need to apply the generated staffing pattern to your ICT data. • Redo the process if the underlying data changes.

  10. Calculate Projections for SE only

  11. Scenario 3 - Need both ICT and staffing pattern data • Uses the national SE ratios and multiplies them by the base and projected values for all other industries excluding SE. • Run the Calculate SE module and check the option to Create ICT records. ICT values will be the same as the staffing pattern totals. • If you do not make any adjustments to the ICT numbers for SE or adjustments to any staffing patterns then you are DONE. • If any staffing pattern adjustments are made then technically you should run the process again.

  12. Calculating State SE in the Projections Suite What happens in the Projections Suite (PS) when you press the Process button for Calculate SE? • State SE is obtained by multiplying National Ratios by State Wage and Salary occupational employment for both the base and projected years. • State SE = National Ratios X (State Wage and Salary occupational employment)

  13. National SE ratios for base and projected year.
