School/community based action guidelines for country teams - an input by Njeza Mrse - Skopje, June 30, 2008 Project: Advancing Educational Inclusion and Quality in South East Europe / OSI ESP
School / community based action Education as a process of personal & social change • Purpose – initiate and support stakeholder participation (school students and parents in particular) in advancing educational inclusion and quality at school and/or community level • Objective– help schools initiate, design and implementparticipatory action research initiativesat school and/or community level OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
School / community based action5 steps Inspired by Paulo Freire’s Method for Education & Action (key words: critical thinking, pedagogy of the oppressed) • (Conduct a Survey)Choose a theme & pose a problem • Select school(s) & local partners – establish ‘parents-students-teachers’ working group/s • Design & realize a group session/s(Analyze the problem, Develop a code & Discuss possible action) • Plan the school or community action • Implement the actionplan (& monitoring) OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
School / community based actionStep 1:Choose theme & pose problem(s) • Starting with the National Survey’s Reports (and conclusions & recommendations in particular) each participating country should • choose a generative theme to be further explored through stakeholder participation • pose a problem/s (focal problem, as well as main causes & effects – using LFA) that reflect main stakeholder’s concerns related to the chosen theme OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
School / community based actionStep 2:Select school(s) & local partners • Decide on school and local partner/s that should be involved • School that is aware of the problem yet has not addressed it through stakeholder participation • Other stakeholders that are affected by the problem and have interest in resolving it • Establish ‘parents-students-teachers’ working group/s or local network • Provide instructions on working group / network structure OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
School / community based actionStep 3:Design & realize a group session/s • (Conducting a survey) • Choosing a theme & posing a problem Session 1 3. Explore the problem (explore personal, institutional and cultural level) 4. Develop a code (learning tool) which would focus group discussion and serve as a reference point to analysis of different aspects of the theme/problem 5. Discuss possible actions to address the problem on all of 3 levels OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
School / community based actionStep 4: Plan school or community action Session 2 • Develop draft action plan proposals • Select one joint action (integrative approach) • Design detailed action plan & budget OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
School / community based actionStep 5: Implement the action (& monitor) • Provide technical assistance to implementing teams (if and when needed) • Write monitoring report – covering the process, difficulties and results / outputs • Write action report – including assessment of impacts OSI ESP / Proposal by Njeza Mrse njeza@eunet.yu
