PRASA & Rail Stations • Do see stations as opportunities for trading & markets • Intent to organise & formalise trading opportunities • Integrate trading opportunities into their planning • Not enough space for everyone, need assistance from neighbouring land owners • Needs to be a plan for each station
Claremont Improvement District Lessons: • Need to spend money on informal trading for it to work (eg Dreyer Street) – capital & maintenance – to capture the informal & formal opportunities • Informal markets need to be marketed too • Planning of markets needs to be feasible & affordable • Partnerships needed to invest in infrastructure • Lack of infrastructure also contributes to illegal activity • Need to balance the rights of traders and public space users (pedestrians)
MYCITI • Formal/ semi-formal trading concessions being looked at for MYCITI stations, piloting Gardens & Civic Stations – tenders have closed but there will be more in future
Key discussion points: Access to the system to access the opportunities – databases (integration across City & PRASA too), communication with networks, training to participate in tender processes & checks The affordability of rentals is key Planning for informal trading in townships; eg Imizamo Yethu – enforcement is threatening livelihoods but there is no planning for trading that people can work with There are lost opportunities for trading, that would also bring life to streets, eg Claremont Main Road The quality of public spaces and markets will also encourage people to stay and use them – shelter & convenience for users and traders Markets need to cater to local needs/ need to be opportunities for markets catering to local interests/ needs Should be opportunities for trading at all stations – incl neighbourhood stations
Key discussion points: MYCITI Missed opportunities for special events trading Tender process needs to be accessible, there needs to be communication with networks and processes to assist people to tender and checks to ensure the big players don’t trump the little players
