  2. MICROCLIMATE Urban heat Island UHI’s are caused by: incoming short wave radiation being absorbed by urban surfaces with high thermal inertia and re reflected as long waves. Depends on material and surface characteristics, and urban geometry that defines parameters such as shading and the “canyon effect” created by urban street scapes. Example: 100 acre project in India Other factors that play are ground cover conditions and human behavior. Mitigated by: Using high reflectance , high albeido surfaces on rooftops, tree shading of urban ground surfaces and shading devices for common areas
