Distribution: Population Pattern Ecumene is portion of world’s surface with permanent settlements. Near Ocean: 2/3 of world population is within 300 miles of ocean, 4/5 within 500 miles of ocean. Main population areas are usually low-lying areas with fertile soil and temperate climates. Humans avoid very dry, cold, wet and high areas.
