  3. Why do we train • To be a language service provider for the Metalworking industry • To increase competitive advantages • To provide Required Productivity and Desired Quality

  4. Limitations • Translation into native language • The object of translation is operating instructions • The subject of translation is CNC machines • In-house personnel

  5. Goals of training • To achieve a high level of translation quality in the area of CNC machines • To achieve a 1800 words per day translation capacity

  6. Overall structure 0-1 months 0-2 months 1-6 months

  7. Getting industry-specific knowledge • The Guide for Technical Translators: CNC Machines (Bashaev, Polisanova, 2011). Size – 200 pages in A5 format, in Russian. • Operating documentation for numerically controlled machines. Size – about 1000 pages, in Russian.

  8. Getting industry-specific knowledge • Video materials • Guide to translating into Russian of engineering documentation (Shalyt, 2007) • Articles (www.perevodmsk.ru) • TQI + combined metrics • The methodology

  9. Getting practical experience: translation • Lexical control (terminology) • Usability control (consistency, sufficiency, style) • Functional control (engineering logic)

  10. Tracking the progress • Translator experienced in other domain • Translator experienced in other domain + glossary of terms • Translation of acceptable quality • Translation of high quality (Desired Quality)

Summary • No training • no Desired Quality for our customers • no Proofreadable quality for us • 2 months (350 hours) of training to provide proofreadable translation • + 4 months of practice work to provide translation of Desired Quality • + 6-12 months of practice work to provide proofreading
