  3. Kingdom of Kongo • Kings used governors to rule each province • King in charge of the economy • Kingdom mined iron & copper for their own use and for trade • Produced pottery and clothing • Provinces pay taxes every 6 months • Used cowrie shells as money

  5. European Contact • By the 1480’s Portugal begins to explore the western coast of Africa • Early on trade between the Africans and the Portuguese • Portuguese brought guns, horses and other goods • Portuguese brought the Christian religion

  6. Alfonso I • NzingaMbemba took the name Alfonso I • Catholicism official religion • Eventually the good will between the Africans and Portuguese would go away • Kongo began supplying the Portuguese with slaves • In time, Kongo would cut its ties to Portugal
