Alternative secondary education inside an Adult • Community Education Centre • Aimed at 300+ not in school, not employed 15-19 yo in • Wodonga – recurrent funding, not youth project • based • Commenced 2006 – 31 students (Wodonga) • In 2011 – 150+ students (campus Albury and Wodonga) • Low class sizes • High levels of social welfare student support • Students = 90% sofa kids • Outcomes have been academically high (given the • starting point), socially wonderful but • with some failings 51st ALA National Conference Village of Learning
Village of Learning notion • Reversing numbers – more adults than young students • Adults who are eager, happy to learn • Adults who bring calmness, tolerance, opportunity • Adults who are de-facto grandparents • Adults who help – dance, employment, health etc • Mix of students - Migrants, PWD, Children Services, • accredited and non-accredited, • Connections to a wider community • EAT WELL, DO WELL – NAB, Scholarships + 51st ALA National Conference Village of Learning
