Africa Research in Sustainable Intensification for the Next Generation: Implementation and experience in sub-humid Babati, Tanzania Mateete Bekunda Farming Systems Agronomist East and Southern Africa Project Presentation at the AR-SIMLEZA Meeting, Lilongwe, Malawi 28 May 2013
Conduct research in close cooperation with participating farmers and through their grassroots organizations. • Maximise conduct of field experiments on the same farms and fields so that the effects of treatment integration may be determined, and residual benefits quantified • Prior to the cropping season, RT to organize a meeting to discuss: • which of their WP technologies will be best integrated • how they may be scientifically designed & implemented • A project planning meeting with farmers, local administrators and extension supervisors at Action Site level be convened to discuss: • implementation schedules. • local farmer involvement in selection of experiment sites, • Farmer management of on-farm research • For 2012-13, recommended mother-baby and field demonstration approaches for the truthing studies as these also allow for implementation of technology dissemination through participating farmers and farmers’ groups. • Guidelines for research implementation
All research packages have started, but at different start-up times • Most implementation guidelines were executed at work-package level rather than at project level • Partner Institutional support to AR through pre-financing of activities - appreciated • Results to provide opportunities for future integrated research as we identify (in-situ) new challenges to address • Lessons learned
2012/13: Partners conducting specialized activities on SAME Trial Sites, and observing…
. Example Introducing new bean varieties: what we have observed
Michael’s Baby Site Nutrient deficiencies and… …aphids infestation
. Lucian’s Baby Trial Site: Excellent management; short, weak stakes Patrick’s Baby Trial Site: Erosion and soil loss
. Daniel’s Baby Trial Site: impact of moisture stress; increased impact on less fertile soils. Hando’s Baby Trial Site: halo blight
