How? Why? Access Importance ? Best Search Engine? Where? What?
Definition of “Access”According to “The Free Dictionary” Online dictionary “A means of approaching, entering, exiting, communicating with, or making use of…” Or “The ability or right to approach, enter, exit, communicate with, or make use of.”
Why is “access” Important • We need to be able to access various types of information and information sources in order to make objective and unbiased claims and statements. • Without access to information we will not have proper and factual knowledge on a subject, and only subjective information will be presented because it will be based on what knowledge we do have compared to the knowledge that is current.
Where can you access information? • DVD’s or Videos • The Internet • Websites • Magazine and newspaper websites • Company website • Blogs • Government or regional portals • Periodicals • Government documents • Social Networks • Internet articles • Library catalogues • Etc. • The library • Books • Handbooks/yearbooks • Encyclopaedias • Maps & Atlas’s • Journals • Old news papers and magazines • Etc.
How to access information • Type in key words in the Search Engines on the internet • Examples: • Google • Yahoo • Bing • Firefox
Advantages • Gaining knowledge on many various subjects and anything that is of interest to you • If you have the relevant recourses i.e. Computers, smart phones, etc. Information is easily accessible. • More life opportunities are available to you for eg.: • Job opportunities (Gumtree), • Dating sites(Match.com), • reconnection with old friends (Facebook), • Selling and buying of various items such as; • food and furniture(bid or buy).
Disadvantages • As mentioned before, if you have the relevant recourses the information becomes easily accessible but those who don't have these recourses, are at a disadvantage.
Why • Why do we need access? • To gain knowledge • To share knowledge • To compare knowledge
Those less fortunate • Schools in poorer communities and rural areas that cannot afford to access the internet. • Yet they are able to become a member of a library, for a library is a government service. • Solutions • Perhaps the government should have a fit in wifi to the library so that the less fortunate are able to access the internet and expand their knowledge
