  1. COUNTERARGUMENTS

  2. What is a counterargument? A counterargument expresses the viewpoint of the “other side” • You can’t ignore the fact that the opposition ISgoing to make some valid points • Therefore,YOUmust address their points and PROVE why they are INCORRECT.

  3. Will a counterargument weaken my argument? NO!!! It gives YOU the chance to respond to your audience’s concerns or questions BEFORE they can even ask! It also shows that you have considered ALL SIDES of the issue and your audience should feel like they can TRUST you!

  4. How do I organize my counterargument? Step #1: Spend 1-2 sentences discussing one or two of the major points that the opposing side will make - you need to choose their STRONGEST points to disprove - begin with phrases like “Some may argue that…” or “The opposing side believes that…”, etc. Step #2: Spend 3-5 sentences discussing HOW that is incorrect thinking or showing a different side of the matter - use phrases like “However”, “On the other hand”, “In contrast”, etc.

  5. Example Issue: Should students be allowed to have beverages in class? My opinion: Yes, I agree students should be allowed to have beverages in class. Counterargument: Some may argue that students are not responsible enough to have drinks in the classroom and that it will be more of a distraction due to excessive spilling. However, students have open drinks all the time in the cafeteria and there is rarely a spill. As a compromise, there could be a rule put in place that only clear liquids with lids are acceptable so if there is a spill, there isn’t any permanent damage done. Also, it would drastically limit the number of times students left class in order to get a drink of water thus reducing the amount of time they are away from classroom instruction.
