Scientific notation is a shorthand method of writing numbers that have a large number of digits. B x 10n Bis a number between 1 and 10. n is an integer.
Writing a Number in Scientific Notation • Starting from the left, put a decimal point • to the right of the first digit that is not 0. • Count the number of digits that are passed • as you move to the right from this decimal • point to where the decimal point is in the • original number. (3) Use this number as an exponent for 10. (4) Drop the 0’s at the end of the original number. • Put a multiplication symbol between the • decimal number and the power of 10.

Writing a Number in Scientific Notation IF THE NUMBER IS LESS THAN 1 • Starting from the left, put a decimal point • to the right of the first digit that is not 0. • Count the number of digits that are passed • as you move to the left from this decimal • point to where the decimal point is in the • original number. • Use the negative of this number as an • exponent for 10. (4) Drop any 0’s at the end of the original number. • Put a multiplication symbol between the • decimal number and the power of 10.
