APP – Features & Benefits • Genderless housings with simplified assembly that minimize the number of components • Stackable modular housings available in four sizes to fit most applications • Connection versatility • Low resistance connection with silver or tin plated contacts inside housings that strongly force the contacts together • Color coded housing help ensure that connectors are assembled and mated correctly • Self securing design with stainless steel springs to create a robust force between the contacts that holds the connector in the mated condition, but allows it to be quickly disconnected.
APP Tools • Tools are available from a variety of sources • Best in class tools are the following:
Which tool makes the best crimp? • Both tools do a great job and price aside, it’s difficult to tell which tool created the finished product Top Bottom
And the best crimp is….? • Both tools do a good job • The APP tool die is very precise • The APP tool makes a perfect crimp every time • The PWRTool from Durham Radio is good value for $ • The PWRTool does a good job for most applications • If budget is the determining factor, buy the PWRTool • While the resulting crimp from either tool produces a good fit in the APP connector, the crimp (done by the PWRTool) can be pulled out of the APP connector
APP connectors • The 30 or 45 amp connector meet most requirements
Jumper inventory • Think ahead and create jumpers for all termination types
Motorola 12v harness • Known as an HKN4137A • Standard wiring harness on all Motorola radios • Make adapter for APP
How to mate your APP connector • Housings should be mated according to the diagram below, viewing from the contact side (opposite the wire side), tongue down, hood up, RED on the LEFT, BLACK on the RIGHT.
Wire choice • Select wire type based on application • Always try to use one size larger • Label all terminations
12v wiring for your vehicle • Consider using BlueSea wiring products (www.bluesea.com) • Use a common ground point • Do not wire to battery ground – use vehicle ground • Crimp, solder and shrink wrap all connections
Making crimp terminals • Crimp or Stacon terminals are used for variety of applications • Available in both insulated and non-insulated • Non-insulated terminals should be crimped, soldered and covered with heat shrink tubing • Use a good crimp tool for making these connectors
Wire Stripping tools • A variety of tools – just pick one
