The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child ‘Children and young people have the right to express opinions on matters which affect them and have those opinions taken seriously’
What does this mean? ‘Participation means that it is my right to be involved in making decisions, planning and reviewing any action that might affect me. Having a voice, having a choice’.
What does this mean at CCJ? Having a say on issues such as: • What things help me to best learning in class? • What teachers do that help me learn in class. • What makes a good teacher? • How can I help my school be the best place it can be for me to learn? • What resources should the school buy to best help us learn • What types of homework are best for helping us learn? • How should everyone behave in school? • What causes should the school support?
Ways you can have your say. Focus Groups Groups of pupils being asked about a particular subject to get their ideas. Mr Daniels will be talking to pupils about P.E. in groups.
School Council What does the council do? Represents the views of pupils in the school. 2 pupils from each class (1 boy, 1 girl). Discuss school issues that effect us as children. Tells Miss Wardle what we think & feel about school life.
School Council What DOESN’T the council do? Decide what subjects are taught. Have the final say in who teaches at CCJ. Decide how all the schools budget (money) is spent.
I want to be a school Council Member. What do I do now? • Talk to people that have been on the school council to see what it involves and the skills you need. • Talk more as a class with your teachers about what being a school council member means & what skills I need. • If you would like to represent your write a letter to your teacher saying: • Why you want to be school council rep. • Why you would be a good rep for your class. • Hold an election in class before Friday 17th October to elect your class reps.
