Organizations as Open Systems • Organizations are “collections of people working together, in divisions of labor, to achieve a common purpose.” • “Synergy” = the creation of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. • Open systems exchange input and output with the environment.
Managers • A person who is responsible for work that is accomplished through the performance contributions of one or more persons. • Performance effectiveness • Performance efficiency
Managers’ Functions • Planning = setting performance objectives and identifying the actions needed to accomplish them. • Organizing = dividing up the work to be done and coordinating results to achieve a desired purpose • Leading = directing and coordinating the work efforts of other people to help them to accomplish important tasks • Controlling = monitoring performance, comparing actual results to objectives, and taking corrective action as necessary.
Information Systems • A set of interrelated components that collect (or retrieve), process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization. • Formal and Informal Information Systems
Shifting Role of IT • IT as a change agent • The shift from viewing IT as expenses to viewing IT as a value-added tool. • IT enhances communication and collaboration
Why technology management? • To survive, companies must change the way they do businesses. • Technology adds to complexity of the businesses. • Ignoring technology or don’t manage it well could lead to profit loss.

Challenge #1: Structure • IT enables change in organizational structure. • IT enhances communications and collaboration in an organization. • Three factors for the right structure: coordination, differentiation, and integration (Afuah & Tucci 2001)
Challenge #2: Systems • Systems are in place to support different functions, monitor performance, and reward (or punish) individuals or groups in an agreed upon way. • Include reward, training, and information systems.
Challenge #3: People • Individuals & Groups • Attributes of individuals and groups • Managing people and group
Challenge #4: Strategy • A plan to gain advantages over the competitors. • Three levels: corporate, business, and function • Three generic strategies at a business unit level: cost leadership, differentiation, and focus.
Challenge #5: Environment • Circumstance where the firm is operated in. • At macro level, four major segments are social, economic, political, and technological.
