Energy. The World Around Us Is Full of Energy. What is Energy?. The ability to do work. Work is …. Force exerted upon an object to cause that object to be displaced W = F x d The Joule is the unit of work. 1 Joule = 1 Newton * 1 meter

What is Energy? • The ability to do work
Work is … • Force exerted upon an object to cause that object to be displaced • W = F x d The Joule is the unit of work. 1 Joule = 1 Newton * 1 meter • A force is exerted upon the object to cause that object to be displaced.
There Are 2 States of Energy • Potential Energy PE • Kinetic Energy KE
Potential Energy • Stored energy as the result of position. Gravitational Elastic
Gravitational Potential Energy • Energy stored in an object as the result of its vertical position or height • Dependent on two variables - the mass of the ball and the height to which it is raised. PEgrav = mass * g * height
Gravitational Potential Energy • It is directly proportional to its height above the zero position • A doubling of the height will result in a doubling of the gravitational potential energy.
Elastic Potential Energy • Energy stored in elastic materials as the result of their stretching or compressing.
There Are 2 States of Energy • Potential Energy PE = mgh • Kinetic Energy KE
Kinetic Energy • The energy of motion: • Vibrational • Rotational • Translational (motion from one location to another)*
Kinetic Energy • Kinetic energy of an object depends on the mass of the object
So….. • Kinetic energy can be converted into Work! • Work: Force exerted upon an object to cause that object to be displaced
There Are 2 States of Energy • Potential Energy(J) • PE = mgh • Kinetic Energy (J) • KE = ½ mv²
Energy • Law of Conservation of Energy: Energy can not be created or destroyed • All forms of energy can be converted to other forms PE KE W
All forms of energy can be converted to other forms: PE KE W mgh = ½ mv² = Fd J = J = J
