  3. The Forgetting Curve • Based on a one-hour lecture • Reviewing regularly helps you retain material • Used correctly, the Cornell notes system will help students accomplish this

  4. 10th Grade AVID • All students should take the PSAT (Saturday Oct. 15/ Register w/ bookkeeper by Oct. 12th- $23). • All eligible students may attend one field trip (fundraise $$$) – students cannot have any D’s/ F’s on grade check given every 3 weeks. • All Students should challenge themselves w/ level of Rigor. • AP Courses=depth not breadth

Main differences Between 9th and 10th Grade • Grade Point Average Counts for College! • Level of rigor in academic classes; for example Chemistry (standard 10th grade course), Advanced English II/ AP Euro History (designed for competitive college bound) • One more core class- MWH/ AP Euro • AVID resources (tutoring) should be readily incorporated into student’s academic plan • Begin basic introduction to SAT/ ACT

College Admissions Requirements • A-G requirements: History/Social Science-2 years required English-4 years required Mathematics-3 required, 4 recommended Lab Science-2 required, 3 recommended Foreign Language-2 required, 3 recommended Visual and Performing Arts- 1 year required College Prep electives-1 year required ** Course level impacts college decisions and increases college readiness.

  7. Cal State Eligibility Index: 2900 Minimum (GPA x800 + SAT Math + Critical Reading) 3500 min. target index UC Admissions Index: SAT (Math, Critical Reading and Writing) Scale Based on GPA (3.0 minimum to apply) What colleges are looking for:

College Freshman Profile • High School GPA’s of entering freshmen • San Diego State:3.77 Class ’08 – CSUF 3.35 • UC: 3.61 (Riverside)- 4.18 (Berkeley) – 3.95 (Irvine) • Test Scores: • UC Riverside: SAT 1: 560 (Math), 515 (Critical Reading), 570 (Writing) /ACT 23 • UC Berkeley: SAT 1: 696 (Math), 665 (Critical Reading), 675 (Writing) /ACT 29 • Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: 650 Math, 595 (Critical Reading), 620 (Writing) /ACT 28 • Cal State San Marcos: SAT 1: 500 (Math), 500 (Critical Reading), 500 (Writing)/ACT 21

  9. AVID’s Impact on College • National College Going Rate to complete 4-year college entrance requirements: • National (Non-AVID): 36% • National (AVID): 89%

How can parents help? • Encourage students to come to school daily! • Be active with www.mesarams.com and abi (passwords available from Ms. Isbell) cisbell@murrieta.k12.ca.us • Discuss with students selection of tutorial group they will join on tutorial day. • Occasionally review a page of notes. • Use questions developed by students to help review for concepts and tests. • Have weekly checks of organization
