Welcome to CRPP - EPF LausanneITPA on "Transport physics" and "Confinement, database and modeling”A.Fasoli, on behalf of CRPP Directorate CRPP You are here
Switzerland and CRPP-EPFL in fusion • Switzerland is a strong player worldwide in fusion research (5th country in EU) • All fusion activities in Switzerland are conducted by the Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasmas (CRPP), Association Euratom-Swiss Confederation • CRPP is part of School of Basic Sciences of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), one of the two federal science and technology Institutes (~5’000 undergrads, 1’500 grad students, total ~10’000 people) • CRPP has about 160 personnel, including ~40 PhD students • CRPP addresses key physics and technology issues for ITER and DEMO and has a strong educational role
ITER Fusion Reactor EURATOM Associations Worldwide Labs JET IFMIF TCV Plasma Theory Technology Basic device Gyrotron Research Industrial plasmas Astrophysics Industry Overview of CRPP activities Education and Training
ITER and JET developments • ITER: Front steering launcher for mode (NTM) stabilisation . • ITER: 170GHz, 2MW gyrotron test facility • ITER: Magnetics • JET • Edge physics, NTMs, density peaking, … • MHD spectroscopy using CRPP-built antennas
X3 HRLW ~ tE/tL-mode X2 bootstrap current fraction The Tokamak à Configuration Variable, TCV • Highest shaping capability • Most powerful ECH systems (4.5MW) • TCV mission: Physics for ITER and Demo • Transport of particles, energy and momentum in shaped plasmas • Edge physics • H-mode physics • ECH and ECCD physics • Advanced plasma control • Advanced tokamak: High performance steady-state scenarios R0=0.88m, a<0.25m, BT<1.54T, Ip<1MA
Theory and Modelling • First principles modelling of turbulence • Interpretation/prediction of experiments • Exploration of new 3D configurations Ex. ITGs TORPEX - Basic plasma physics experiment • Turbulence and transport in toroidal plasmas Industrial plasmas • Process optimisation via a physics understanding in industrial scale reactors
SINQ target 1:1 mock-up of EDIPO IFMIF SULTAN Small samples Fusion Technology (CRPP groups at the PSI-Villigen site) • Materials • Irradiation damage • New materials for DEMO • IFMIF: specimen size and geometry effects • Main exp. tools: hot lab, hot cells, SINQ • Superconductor testing • Support ITER in final design and construction • Two worldwide unique facilities • SULTAN (11T) • EDIPO (dipole, 12.5T), being assembled
We wish you a very fruitful meeting and an enjoyable stay in Lausanne!
